Ok, the inaugural comment - a few bones to pick with Oliver's chronicle column:
First, don't write an inspirational op-ed to conservatives about how they are suppose to convince others of their point of view and do it with PhD level vocabulary. Especially if you're writing to conservative 20-somethings in a college paper.
Let's rip on Obama for being elitist and then write the most blatantly elitist article possible.
The right lost because of an inability to capture the moderate / independent middle. So maybe it IS time to re-evaluate the tenets of the traditional conservative platform - pro-life, pro-guns, pro-America, pro-Team America, anti-gay marriage - into a new platform based on reforming institutions like health care and Social Security and shoring up the economy.
Also, two wonderful statements from the article to pull out:
“And then he'll get down to the task of governing the country-a task he has sought all his life but prepared for surprisingly little. The cultish enthusiasm will slowly fade as "Hope" and "Change" are translated into bills and budgets. And then America will realize again why it so rarely votes for the policies of the left: They do not work very well.”
Unsubstantiated garbage – they worked for FDR.
"And then we go on the offensive. In our classrooms, in our churches and clubs, on the bus, in the dorm common room, we must always be ready to explain what we believe and why we believe it, not to confront but to convince. We must never shrink from engaging when we hear that America is not a force for good in this world, or that corporations are evil and success is a crime or that morality is always relative and there is no such thing as truth."
Yes, because the left doesn’t believe in truth.
Somebody please tell me they thought this article was crap as well.
